Then we explore southern Adjara: St Andrew's waterfall, the Sarpi border and convent, the Roman Gonio-Apsaros Fortress, the panorama from the Gonio Cross, wine tasting at the Tamazuri cellar and lunch by the river in the Tkhilnari valley with fresh trout. The day ends at Queen Tamar's bridge in Makho and the eucalyptus avenue.

Stop 1
Batumi
Batumi is the capital of Adjara and the main resort town on the Black Sea coast. The city is famous for its seaside boulevard, modern architecture, historical streets of old Batumi and piazza square. On the boulevard there is a moving statue "Ali and Nino" and the alphabet tower, which look especially beautiful in the evening light. From Batumi, you can easily go to the Botanical Garden, Mtirala National Park and the waterfalls of the mountainous region of Adjara.

St Andrew the First-Called Waterfall
St Andrew the First-Called Waterfall pours from a cliff beside the coastal road between Sarpi and Kvariati — from a height of about 20 metres, almost straight into the Black Sea. In front of it stands a stone monument to the Apostle Andrew and his companion Simon the Zealot, erected in 2008. According to tradition, St Andrew came to Georgia by this route to preach Christianity, and while he rested near Sarpi a spring burst from the rock. Today it is a short photo stop and a place pilgrims love.

Sarpi
Sarpi is Georgia's southernmost village on the Black Sea coast, on the border with Turkey. The main Georgia–Turkey border crossing is here, and the village sits in a rocky bay between the sea and forested mountains. From Sarpi's clear-water pebble beach you can see the minarets of the Turkish village — the border between two worlds is only a few metres away. St Andrew the First-Called's waterfall and monument are nearby.

Sarpi Convent of St John the Theologian
The Convent of St John the Theologian in Sarpi stands on a hill above the village of Sarpi, with the Black Sea, the coastline and the Georgia–Turkey border all in view at once. The convent courtyard has a quiet, well-kept garden and views out over the sea. It is an active convent, so women need a headscarf and a skirt to enter the church, and men long trousers. Below are St Andrew's waterfall and Sarpi beach.

Gonio-Apsaros Fortress
Gonio-Apsaros Fortress stands 12 km from Batumi near the mouth of the Chorokhi river and is one of the oldest strongholds in Georgia. In the 1st century AD this was the Roman fortified town of Apsaros, later ruled by the Byzantines and the Ottomans. The rectangular wall with 18 towers survives almost complete. Inside are archaeological excavations, the remains of Roman baths and a small museum. Legend places the grave of the Apostle Matthias here, and Greek myth that of Apsyrtus, Medea's brother.

Gonio Cross (Akhalsopeli)
The Gonio Cross stands on a hill above the village of Akhalsopeli, with one of the best panoramas of the Adjarian coast. From here you see Gonio-Apsaros Fortress, the mouth of the Chorokhi, the whole coastline up to Batumi's high-rises and, to the south, the mountains of Turkey. The road up runs past subtropical slopes and tea and citrus gardens. The view is especially beautiful at sunset.

Tamazuri Wine Cellar
Tamazuri is a family wine cellar in the village of Gonio, Khelvachauri municipality. Tastings take place in a cosy, almost homely basement, often led by the owner himself, who talks about wine with real passion. You taste homemade Saperavi, Tavkveri, Tsolikouri, Rkatsiteli and Kindzmarauli, as well as chacha and brandy — with cheese and churchkhela. You can buy wine and even have a photo or inscription of your choice put on the bottle.

Tkhilnari
Tkhilnari is a green valley and village near Batumi, in Khelvachauri municipality, where a mountain river makes a perfect escape from the city heat. The valley has a waterfall and several riverside restaurants. Trout are farmed in the river's clean water, so the local restaurants cook it fresh. In summer you can also swim in the river.

Queen Tamar's Bridge at Makho
The arched bridge at Makho, in Khelvachauri municipality, is a medieval stone bridge over a small river by the village of Makho. In Adjara people link such bridges with Queen Tamar — they were part of the old trade routes connecting the coast with Mountainous Adjara. The narrow arch, wrapped in greenery in a quiet village setting, is worth a short photo stop. The wide Chorokhi valley opens up nearby.

We return to Batumi through the eucalyptus avenue — the trees were planted to drain the swamps and shield the city from mountain winds.
