About this Place
One location, many impressions
Bagrati Cathedral is the symbol of Kutaisi and one of the key monuments of medieval Georgian architecture. King Bagrat III built it on Ukimerioni Hill and completed it in 1003, in the era when the Georgian lands were being united into a single kingdom. In 1692, during an Ottoman invasion, the cathedral was blown up and stood without its dome for centuries. Conservation began in the 20th century, and in 2012 the cathedral was restored and services resumed. The hill offers a beautiful view over Kutaisi and the Rioni valley. It is an active church, so modest clothing is required. 📷 Photos: Alexkom000, Bernard Gagnon, Marcin Konsek, Brave Lemming / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY / CC BY-SA)
