A private tour for those who want to get to know Batumi in a single day — from the city streets to a tropical garden and a Georgian feast. We start in the old town: the Medea monument on Europe Square, a stroll across the Italian-style Piazza, then along the seaside boulevard to the Alphabet Tower and the moving "Ali and Nino" sculpture.

Next we spend two hours in Batumi Botanical Garden: more than 5,000 plants from nine climate zones on the slopes of the Green Cape, with views out over the sea.

We finish in Chakvi — the cradle of Georgian tea — where, if you like, you can sit down to a Georgian feast with a tasting of local wine. Ideal for families and first-time visitors to Batumi.

Stop 1
Batumi
Batumi is the capital of Adjara and the main resort town on the Black Sea coast. The city is famous for its seaside boulevard, modern architecture, historical streets of old Batumi and piazza square. On the boulevard there is a moving statue "Ali and Nino" and the alphabet tower, which look especially beautiful in the evening light. From Batumi, you can easily go to the Botanical Garden, Mtirala National Park and the waterfalls of the mountainous region of Adjara.

Europe Square
Europe Square is Batumi's central square, framed by 19th-century old-town buildings and modern hotels. At its centre stands the Medea monument, holding the Golden Fleece — a reminder of the myth of Colchis and the Argonauts. The building with the astronomical clock, colourful facades and fountains make it one of the most photogenic spots in Batumi. The old-town streets, Piazza and the seaside boulevard are all a few minutes' walk away. By day the square is full of city life; in the evening it is beautifully lit and becomes the main stage for festivals and holidays.

Piazza
Piazza is a square in the heart of Batumi's old town, built in 2010 in Italian style. Buildings with arched galleries and ornate facades surround it on every side, and its paving is laid out as a large mosaic. A clock tower rises above the square, with St Nicholas Church right beside it. Cafés and restaurants fill the ground floors, which makes Piazza a favourite meeting place for locals and visitors alike. In the evening the square lights up, live music is often playing, and in summer it hosts concerts.

Batumi Boulevard
Batumi's seaside boulevard was laid out in 1881 and today is a green strip stretching more than 7 km along the Black Sea coast. Footpaths and a cycle lane run between avenues of palms and magnolias. Along the way you find a Japanese garden, colonnades, a summer theatre, dancing fountains and the coast's landmarks — the Alphabet Tower and the "Ali and Nino" sculpture. The old section is known for its shady alleys, the new one for modern architecture. The boulevard is the centre of life in Batumi: people jog and cycle here in the morning and watch the sunset by the sea in the evening.

Alphabet Tower
The Alphabet Tower is one of the symbols of Batumi's seaside boulevard — a 130-metre structure built in 2012 to honour the Georgian script. The 33 letters of the Georgian alphabet run along its double spiral. At the top is a silver sphere with an observation deck, from which Batumi, the port, the sea and the mountains are all visible at once. In the evening the tower lights up and the letters shimmer in colour. It stands near the "Ali and Nino" sculpture and the Ferris wheel, so you are sure to pass it on a walk along the boulevard.

Ali and Nino
"Ali and Nino" is a moving sculpture by the Georgian artist Tamara Kvesitadze on Batumi's seaside boulevard. Created in 2010, it depicts the heroes of Kurban Said's famous novel — Ali, an Azerbaijani Muslim, and Nino, a Georgian Christian. The two eight-metre steel figures move slowly: they draw closer, merge into one for a moment and then drift apart again — a love story that brings different cultures together. The sculpture is especially beautiful at sunset and in the evening, when the figures are lit in colour. It stands near the Alphabet Tower, next to the Ferris wheel.

Batumi Botanical Garden
Batumi Botanical Garden lies 9 km from Batumi on Mtsvane Kontskhi (Green Cape), on a hillside above the sea. It was founded in 1912 by the botanist Andrey Krasnov and is today one of the largest botanical gardens of the former Soviet Union, covering more than 100 hectares. The garden is divided into phytogeographic sections: plants from East Asia, North and South America, Australia, the Mediterranean, the Himalayas and the humid subtropics of the Caucasus grow side by side — more than 5,000 species in all. Palm avenues, bamboo groves and eucalyptus trees run down to the sea. From its paths and viewpoints you can see the coast of Batumi and Kobuleti. Allow at least 2 hours for a visit, and bring comfortable shoes and water.

Chakvi
Chakvi is a seaside town in Kobuleti municipality, about 15 km from Batumi, just north of the Green Cape. It sits between the mountain slopes and the Black Sea, wrapped in subtropical greenery. Chakvi is considered the cradle of tea growing in Georgia: at the end of the 19th century the Chinese specialist Lau Jin Jao planted the first commercial tea plantations here. Old tea gardens can still be seen on the slopes. Today Chakvi is a quiet resort with pebble beaches, sea views and family restaurants where you can taste Georgian cuisine and local wine.
