Martvili (Chkondidi) Monastery is one of the most important spiritual centres of Samegrelo. Its main church, dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin, was built in the 7th century and stands on a high hill overlooking the Egrisi Valley and the Martvili area. In the Middle Ages it was the seat of the bishops of Chkondidi, among them Giorgi Chkondideli, tutor of King David the Builder. The church keeps old frescoes, and the monastery grounds include a bell tower and the Chikovani chapel. The monastery is active, so modest clothing is required.
