About this Place
One location, many impressions
Skhalta's Church of the Dormition stands in the Skhalta river valley in Khulo municipality, surrounded by forested mountains. Built at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, it is the largest medieval church in Mountainous Adjara. Its facades are decorated with carved windows and an ornate doorway, and fragments of 13th-century frescoes survive inside. Today it is an active monastery and the seat of the diocese. The quiet courtyard looks out over the valley. To enter the church women need a headscarf and a skirt, and men long trousers.
