About this Place
One location, many impressions
In the 1930s, in Soviet times, the grounds of Petra Fortress were turned into a lemon nursery, a lemonarium. A multi-level concrete structure was built in steps along the fortress slope; it was once glazed, and citrus trees were grown inside. After the collapse of the Soviet Union the lemonarium was abandoned and slowly fell apart. Today only tiers of concrete pillars and beams remain, overgrown with ivy and wild plants. This strange mix of ancient fortress stone and Soviet concrete, buried in greenery, is one of the most photogenic corners of Tsikhisdziri. 📷 Photos: Giorgi Abdaladze, AlexandreAssatiani / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 4.0 / CC BY 4.0)
