One location, many impressions
Petra Castle is one of the most important and impressive historical and archaeological monuments of Adjara. It is located in the municipality of Kobuleti, in the village of Tsikhisdzir, on the coast of the Black Sea, on a high rocky cape. The fortress-city was built in the 6th century by order of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. Because of its strategic location, Petra controlled the Black Sea trade and military routes that connected Byzantium, Georgia, and Persia. It was known for its impregnable walls and unique terraced architecture. Nowadays, modern museum infrastructure, footpaths and viewing platforms are arranged on the territory of Petra Castle. Historical walls covered with greenery, stepped terraces and panoramic sea views add a special aesthetic appeal to the place.
